CASE STUDY: SOLAR

Market and competitive analysis of residential solar mini-grid in 8 African countries

  • We have analyzed the Mini-Grid market on 8 priority markets for the client, to identify growth opportunities: Benin, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Kenya, Senegal, South Africa, Togo and Zambia
  • 20 stakeholders interview (public-sector, private sector executives)
  • Analysis of country regulation and off-grid electrification strategies
  • Mapping of players’ product portfolios
  • Identification of tenders
  • Entry strategy

CASE STUDY: HYDROPOWER

Modelling of cost-reflective tariffs in 2035 and 2040 following the commissioning of a major run-of-the-river dam for a global Utility

We listed existing all existing power plants in the country > 10MW and gathered data on the plants: technology, capacity, capacity factor, LCOE.

Using a proprietary dispatch model, we simulated several scenarios for 2035 and 2040, making a few external parameters vary, including Electricity demand growth and Price of natural gas.

  • Each scenario was a set of plants that could become operational between now and 2035; the scenario to be assessed against the others was the commissioning of the client’s project, a large run-of-the river dam. We calculated cost-reflective tariffs in all scenarios and compared the results.

CASE STUDY: BIOMASS

Comprehensive opportunity assessment across 13 countries for thermic biomass and identification of agro-industrial partners for a Global Utility

We started by assessing which crops were suitable for generation of electricity and heat through the thermal process, based on calorific content, non-existence of competitive usage, and existence of operational plants using this crop. Then, for each of the 13 countries, we evaluated:

  • Inputs potential, based on presence of agro-industrial aggregators and the volume of waste they are currently handling
  • Electricity market potential, based on electricity prices and ease of entering electricity market
  • Institutional potential, based on ease of doing business, interest of the government for biomass, presence of IPPs in the country

CASE STUDY: SOLAR

Competitive analysis of EPC players in the solar Mini-Grid market in Indonesia and Myanmar

We have studied in-depth EPC mini-grids players in Myanmar and Indonesia, as well as other players across the value chain: logistics, batteries, panels suppliers which can be either partners, suppliers or competitors, and have reviewed local partnerships options for mini-grid developers.

We have also analyzed the mini-grids market in Indonesia and suggested entry options for this market:

  • Client segmentation
  • 10 experts’ interviews
  • 40 potential clients surveyed
  • Analysis of local regulation
  • Local partnerships options

CASE STUDY: METERING

Evaluation of the regulatory and technological maturity of EV submetering models in Europe, the US and Asia

Scope of the project comprised 8 countries: US, UK, France, Germany, Norway, Sweden, China, India and South Korea.

For each country, we mapped the ecosystem and value chain of electricity production, distribution and sales, and identified stakeholders responsible for metering, as well as the regulated regulation, tools in place, and technical capabilities of the system.

We benchmarked the services currently offered by innovative players, as well as submetering pilots operating with a derogation to the official metering protocol and conducted an analysis on the likely evolution of technological and regulatory schemes.

CASE STUDY: METERING

Opportunities for EV smart charging products in California, Texas and NY to bring value to the electrical grid

We mapped the electricity grid ecosystem, value chain and stakeholders in the 3 US States, and identified grid balancing mechanisms and offers as well as the related regulatory aspects.

Output included a benchmark of current solutions offered to business and residential customers to save on electricity bill by offering flexibility in their charging times, as well as estimates of these potential savings in various scenarios.

We then conducted a market sizing for the client’s product based on its distinctive features, estimated demand for such products, and position with respect to the competition.

CASE STUDY: GRID

Benchmark of EV charging infrastructure and integration with the electrical grid for a European DSO

We conducted a comparative evaluation of the EV charging infrastructure and integration with the electrical grid across 7 countries: Germany, UK, Norway, Sweden, California, China, India.

For each country, we analyzed:

  • EV market and major trends
  • EV charging infrastructure and operators
  • Regulation and incentives
  • TSOs and DSOs projects to optimize grid use

We covered major programs of smart charging and incentives for drivers through various mechanisms, including participation to balancing mechanism, peak shaving, demand response programs, etc.

CASE STUDY: HYDROGEN

Green hydrogen off-taking study in selected countries in Africa, for an international energy company

  • Priority opportunities identified in ammonia, methanol, mining, steel, and an additional 8 other industries
  • Business case by industry with economic drivers and breakeven LCOH (levelized cost of hydrogen)
